When you have a stable job and wanted to get marry, the thought of finding a home where your family can settle down must have crossed your mind. You have two options to provide a roof over your family – it’s either you go for a rented place or buy your own. Both choices have their own advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, having a home of your own is so much better.

Possessing a home that you can call your own can give you a sense of pride. It is everyone’s dream to own a place for themselves. If you own your house, you can do anything you want in it. You can paint the walls red, you can stick a nail on the wall for your paintings and you can remodel any section anytime you want. You also have the freedom to turn up the volume of your radio or television which you can never do so in a rented multi-unit apartment space.

Home ownership also gives your family a sense of security. Your house can be a major investment you can use in times of immediate need and crisis. It is a property which you can always use as leverage for cash.

Furthermore, owning your home offers stability for every member of your family. You won’t go around transferring from place to place because your landlord refuses to renew your lease. When you are moving frequently, this can put a toll on your kids who will have to make adjustments and adapt into the new apartment and neighborhood you’re in.

First-time home buyers are often presented with the dilemma of whether to purchase an old home or a brand-new one. Ultimately, the decision to buy depends largely upon their preferences. Some people prefer newly-built ones; some like the older types. If you are leaning towards purchasing an old home, below are some pros and cons that you should know.

Among the pros of an old home include having a bigger yard area. Notice that lot sizes are so small when it comes to newer homes these days that you only have a few square meters of yard space on your front and back areas. You don’t even get to have side spaces as you sometimes get to share walls with your neighbors. In an older home, lots are often bigger and you will enjoy vast yard space perfect for your pets or planned garden ideas.

Another advantage that you can get when purchasing an old home is that the house has more character with interesting architectural details. Depending on the period it was constructed, it can showcase genuine Craftsman, Victorian or Tudor styles. Moreover, wooden materials that were used in the older times were considerably tougher than the ones being used now.

If there are pros, there are also cons to buying older homes. One of these is the massive maintenance costs. There will always be portions and parts of the home that needs repair such as chimneys, heating systems, plumbing and so on. You may also be required to replace and check out all its electrical wiring systems. It can also be costly to buy old homes because they are usually built on prime locations which are near schools, shopping establishments and transport stations.
